Soccer as a Ritual

Soccer is a sport played around the globe, with unique styles and fan cultures that stem from its history. The constant cycle of seasons and tournaments has led to the rhythm of the sport being ingrained in societies around the world. Take for example Boxing Day matches in England or the World Cup every four years. With its history and persistent patterns, soccer is sometimes described as a ritual that players and fans partake in. Here, we asked students about their own traditions and views when it comes to watching soccer and the World Cup!

What team(s) are you rooting for in the World Cup, and who do you think will win?

Many students that we talked to said that they were passionate to support the team from their country of origin such as Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay, England, and of course the United States. Students also supported Argentina either as their primary team or their second team after their country as they wanted Messi to finally win the World Cup. Finally, it was interesting to see American students that supported teams that were not the US men's national team, perhaps reflecting students' lack of optimism for their prospects.

How do you prefer to watch the games? Do you have any traditions?

Students shared that they liked to watch matches with other people. Some enjoyed watching with family and friends while others liked the company of strangers at bars or traveling to the stadium.

Do you have any favorite memories from the World Cup?

Students shared many fond memories of the World Cup with us. These included watching matches with friends and family as well as special  goals. Students shared memories of traveling to support their national team. Others mentioned watching the USWNT win the World Cup. Some iconic goals mentioned were Iniesta's in the 2010 final, Pavard's vs. Argentina in 2018 and James Rodriguez's spectacular volley in 2014.

Darden Student

"I just remember being really young, I think it was held in Japan. Just like waking up at 5 AM with all my family, having my confetti ready, just in case there was any goals"

Undergraduate Student

"I was in Ireland one year during the final game and so we were watching it in an Irish pub with my family and everybody and the energy was insane."

Darden Student

"I'm supporting Ecuador because I'm from Ecuador and Argentina if it doesn't happen because I want Messi to finally win a World Cup"
