The UVA Student Perspective of the 2022 World Cup

The United States and Soccer

Every four years, a soccer-mania takes over the American public! However, outside of those years, what is the relationship between Soccer and the United States?

Soccer as a Ritual

Soccer is a ritual that has been around for centuries and is still enjoyed by millions of people around the world. It is a game that is both physical and mental, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Soccer has become much more than just a game, it has become a way of life for many, a tradition to be passed down from generation to generation. It is a ritual that brings people together, whether for a friendly match, a tournament, or a league game. Soccer is a celebration of life, and it brings with it a sense of joy, passion, and excitement.

The Politics of Soccer

The road leading to this year's World Cup has sparked lots of controversy, mainly regarding its location, Qatar. In this section we asked students what they thought about Qatar as a host and in general, if they think soccer and sports are a good medium to discuss political and social issues.

Student, 4th Year

"I'm weary of the cultural ad hominem attacks that stem from the broader issues of national politics and sporting events. Because the takes that you see on Twitter are not about the nuances of the government versus people."

Student, 4th Year

"Me personally, I'd prefer if major sporting events are not held in locations that perhaps don't deserve it. Especially ones that could funnel a lot of money to governments that are corrupt and that money might not find its way to the local population."

Student, 4th Year

"I think there are ways around this. You hold the Olympics in Beijing and Russia, there's always going to be problems with the host country. So if they're willing to host it and it won't be a complete disaster, I say let them host it."
